Mestinon (pyridostigmine) is a prescription medication indicated for the symptomatic treatment of myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It acts as a cholinesterase inhibitor, improving the transmission of signals between nerves and muscles by prolonging the action of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. This strengthens muscle contraction and reduces the fatigue characteristic of this condition.
Indications: Treatment of myasthenia gravis. Improves muscle strength and reduces symptoms of weakness, eye fatigue, difficulty swallowing, and limb weakness.
Dosage: The dose should be individualized according to clinical response. Generally, 60-120 mg are administered every 3-4 hours during the day. Dose adjustment should be performed under strict medical supervision.
Contraindications: Mechanical intestinal or urinary obstruction, known hypersensitivity to pyridostigmine or bromides.
Warnings: Use exclusively under medical prescription. Requires monitoring in patients with bronchial asthma, bradycardia, peptic ulcer, or epilepsy. Do not abruptly discontinue treatment.
